The last Silverdale ewe

This image is of the last ewe of the old Silverdale breed from North Lancashire bearing a strong resemblance to the Whitefaced Woodland sheep whose wool I now have available.Picture taken in 1900. The Herdwick sheep were saved from extinction by Beatrix Potter but sadly the Silverdale or Warton Crag sheep died out.... however their genes were passed on to the Whitefaced Woodlands.

Whitefaced Woodland sheep at Far Arnside

I love the traditional hill breeds! This year I should have Whitefaced Woodland fleeces as well as Lonk,Herdwick and some Bluefaced Leicester from The Forest of Bowland to blend with the Whitefaced Woodland and Lonk.Lonk and Herdwick spun together to make fab socks.
